Jade On Addiction

A sampling of Jade's quotes in The Semi-Sober House when dealing with this very serious issue and the sometimes frustrating situations in treatment programs experienced by those who suffer.

“Yeah, what was the doctor like?”

“He was this old dude, but he wasn’t there.”

“What do you mean, he wasn’t there?”

“It was over the Internet, on Skype. He could’ve been in the Himalayas for all I know. It was weird.”

“Sounds like it. . . . . Aren’t they supposed to, like, see you?”

“That’s what I thought.” I laugh as the elevator lurches to a stop. “So that was a waste of time. I didn’t get the prescription for the weed that I wasn’t gonna get anyway.”

“Yeah, yeah. But the pot...tomorrow for sure, right? This isn’t just another trick, is it?” I have been so damaged by all the false promises I was given in the past; it’s hard to trust anyone.

“No, you can go on your way to the house. To COP.”

“COP?” I ask in disbelief.

“That’s what they call it for short. COP is the acronym for Creative Options for Prevention. It used to be Carmel Ridge Residence.”

“Kat seems a little out of it,” Jeanna whispers in my ear. It’s that hour when there is no R.A. in the house. “She’s been hiding in her room, and I feel like she’s relapsed.”

“On what?’ I ask, curious. “Alcohol? That’s what I pegged her as, an alcoholic.” It’s not  only the R.A.s that are nosy and gossipy. When people are living in one house together, there are rarely any secrets.

“I think it’s a little more serious,” Jeanna maintains. Maybe because she’s a drinker, and classifying alcoholism as more minor than it is probably helps her deal with her addiction.

“Like what?” I ask. If Kat has any drugs I want, I want to know.
